EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE PHILIPPINES 1901 $5.00 DARK GREEN, GRADED XF-SUPERB 95.
The underlying stamp, Scott 278, is difficult to obtain with such choice centering. Only 782 were overprinted for use in the Philippines, making this exponentially rarer in such a high grade.
With 2004 P.S.E., 2010 and 2013 P.F. certificates (XF-Superb 95)
EXTREMELY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING AND RARE MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE PHILIPPINES 1903 $5.00 DARK GREEN. ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND MINT N.H. WITH EXTREMELY FINE CENTERING.
With 2009 and 2015 P.F. certificates (XF 90)
FINE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE PHILIPPINES 1917 2-CENT HORIZONTAL PAIR, IMPERFORATE-BETWEEN VERTICALLY, AND THE FIRST WE HAVE OFFERED SINCE KEEPING COMPUTERIZED RECORDS.
The imperforate-between errors exist with the horizontal perforation row missing (in vertical pairs) and with the vertical perforation row missing (in horizontal pairs). The horizontal pairs imperforate-between are considerably rarer, but the catalogue value is lower. Knowledgeable specialists are aware of this anomaly and bid without regard for the catalogue value. The only example we have been able to locate was in the 1993 Gilbert Plass sale (Ivy, Shreve & Mader), and that copy is inferior to the example offered here.
