Sep. 4. 1861 circular datestamp with "Paid" in circle and "5" rate handstamp on red and blue 11-Star Confederate Flag Patriotic cover to Mobile Ala. with matching flag letterhead datelined "Camp Continental, Pensacola, Sept. 6th [sic] 1861", the writer has embellished the flag on the letterhead with "1776" in the field of stars and "Continental" across the white bar, cover very slightly reduced at right, letter has splits reinforced with archival tape, both are still in fresh and excellent condition

EXTREMELY FINE AND RARE FLORIDA USE OF A CONFEDERATE FLAG PATRIOTIC. SELDOM FOUND WITH THE ORIGINAL LETTER INTACT, THIS EXAMPLE HAVING THE ADDED ATTRACTION OF A PATRIOTIC LETTERHEAD.

In the letter the writer, Jonathan Lyons Jr., tells his wife that meat is scarce, because the government is unable to buy any, and that Generals Anderson and Ruggles have arrived (he also mentions Gen. Bragg). Various events surrounding camp life are noted, including mention of a mysterious fire that destroyed the dock.
