Sale Number 1154, Lot Number 2495, Civil War, Blockade Runner Stock CertificatesImporting and Exporting Company of South Carolina, Capital Stock, Importing and Exporting Company of South Carolina, Capital StockImporting and Exporting Company of South Carolina, Capital Stock. 5 x 7.25 in. printed stock certificate, No. 653, for one share to H. Adderly & Co. on March 31, 1864, signed by William C. Bee, President, manuscript transfers on back dated 1869, 1874, and 1876, nice condition with slight ink bleed from back visible on front, still Very Fine, the Importing and Exporting Company of South Carolina was formed in Charleston in late 1862 to own and operate blockade runners, the list of shareholders included many prominent members of Charleston society, the notations on the back indicate that the company continued to pay its investors after the war ended, unlike the case of The Consolidated Steamship Company stock offered in the following lot, Henry Adderley & Co. was the Nassau forwarder and affiliate of Fraser Trenholm & Co.

Sale Number 1154, Lot Number 2496, Civil War, Blockade Runner Stock CertificatesThe Consolidated Steamship Company, Capital Stock, The Consolidated Steamship Company, Capital StockThe Consolidated Steamship Company, Capital Stock. 4.75 x 8 in. capital stock certificate for 25 shares issued Jul. 31, 1863, red and blue on watermarked paper with vignette of a blockade runner at top, dog with safe and key at bottom, Evans & Cogswell Printers imprint, with original signatures of the Henry Hart, President and A. R. Taft, Secretary, endorsed on back (visible from front), wonderful condition with only light folds, Extremely Fine stock certificate from this owner and operator of blockade runners, Consolidated President Hart fled to the North at the end of the war, claiming that since blockade running was illegal he had no financial liability to investors

Sale Number 988, Lot Number 365, Prize Court Mail, Confederate War Department Authorization for Blockade Run by the Annie Berry. War Department letterhead datelined Richmond Apr. 28, 1862, to S. A. Plummer and W. Cameron in Petersburg Va., authorization for the pilot boat Annie Berry to sail from Wilmington with tobacco for the West Indies and to return with ordnance, accompanied by ship's papers and list of wages paid to crew, minor splits along folds, a desirable group of Confederate blockade-runner documents that were presumably captured by a Union blockading vessel

Sale Number 988, Lot Number 366, Prize Court Mail, Description of the Confederate Blockade-Runner Fingal from the U.S.S. Flag Ship Niagara. Manuscript headed "Circular No. 2" and dated Nov. 25, 1861, describing in detail the steamer Fingal and giving notice "A bright lookout must be kept for the Fingal. The Department will be much chagrined should she be permitted to enter a Confederate Port", a notation along the left side indicates this circular arrived the same day as a newspaper article announcing the arrival of the Fingal with 6,000 Enfield rifles (clipping of article pasted to bottom), a most unusual document related to the Union blockade

Matamoros" blue oval on back, English and German transit markings, original letter in German from Texas soldier datelined "Fort Brown March 13, 1863" with excellent contents (translated) which mentions looting of farms by soldiers, young men fleeing to Monterrey to avoid the draft, etc., B. flap torn open and neatly sealed, still fresh and Very Fine, a handsome and very rare usage
