Large margins to full at top, rich color, tied by "New Orleans La. 13 Jul." (1861) circular datestamp on cover to local address with red and blue 11-Star Confederate Flag and Cannon Patriotic design (CN-2), Geo. Ellis, Bookseller imprint, original letter enclosure datelined at New Orleans on July 12, 1861, stamp with small light corner crease at top right, cover with edgewear

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A COLORFUL AND RARE CONFEDERATE PATRIOTIC FLAG AND CANNON DESIGN USED WITH THE 5-CENT NEW ORLEANS POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL.

Of the various Flag and Cannon Patriotic designs, this is one of the rarest. To find it used with the New Orleans provisional is remarkable. We are aware of approximately ten or fewer patriotic covers with the 5c New Orleans provisional stamp, including red and blue Flags, this Cannon design and the unique "Soldier" design in black, offered as lot 554 in Kilbourne Part One (Sale 1186).

(1861) circular datestamp on cover to Lebanon Tenn. with red and blue 11-Star Confederate Flag Patriotic design (F11-15), small manuscript "Voc Populi Voc Dei." ("the voice of the people is the voice of God") written in white stripe of flag, center star with tiny "JA" initials, missing most of backflap and bottom stamp with inconsequential light corner crease in margin mentioned only in anticipation of a certificate

VERY FINE. A COLORFUL AND RARE USE OF A PAIR OF THE NEW ORLEANS 5-CENT POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL ON A CONFEDERATE 11-STAR FLAG PATRIOTIC COVER.

We are aware of ten or fewer patriotic covers with the 5c New Orleans provisional stamp, including red and blue Flag and Cannon designs and the unique "Soldier" design in black (offered in Kilbourne Part One). The 11-Star Flag on this cover has distinctive large five-point stars and deep shading along the folds, giving it a striking appearance.

Sale Number 1186, Lot Number 555, Patriotics-Postmasters ProvisionalsNew Orleans La., 5c Brown on White (62X3), New Orleans La., 5c Brown on White (62X3)New Orleans La., 5c Brown on White (62X3). Position 10, ample to clear margins all around, rich color, tied by "Grand Gulf Miss. Jun. 18" (1861) circular datestamp on cover to Port Gibson Miss. with red and blue 10-Star Confederate Flag Patriotic design (F10-9), "J. K. Sutterley, Bookseller, under the St. Charles Hotel, N.O." imprint along staff at upper left, few tiny sealed edge tears clear of stamp and design

VERY FINE. A COLORFUL AND EXTREMELY RARE USE OF THE NEW ORLEANS PROVISIONAL ON A CONFEDERATE 10-STAR FLAG PATRIOTIC POSTMARKED OUTSIDE NEW ORLEANS.

This cover was posted aboard a steamer with the stamp uncancelled. It was transported to Grand Gulf Miss., where it entered the mails and received its postmark (used to cancel the provisional stamp). It then travelled a few miles inland to Port Gibson.

We are aware of nine patriotic covers with the 5c New Orleans provisional stamp, including red and blue Flag and Cannon designs and the unique "Soldier" design in black (offered in this sale as lot 554). The 10-Star Flag on this cover has a distinctive pattern of stars; another example used from Evergreen La. on June 1, 1861, is offered in this sale as lot 540. The design was later modified by adding an eleventh star to the center (see lot 575 for an example).
