Sale 1263, Lot 88, Civil War -- Confederate States5c Blue, Stone 2 (4). Two, tied by "Marietta Geo. Jul. 16" (1862) circular datestamp on oatmeal cover to Roswell Ga., manuscript "Telegram" at top, edge repair and some minor staining, right stamp with light creases, still Fine, there may have been an interruption of telegraph service between the two towns causing this to be sent in the mails (telegram no longer present), illustrated in Confederate Philatelist (No. 311, p. 177)

Sale 1262, Lot 477, General Issues On Cover5c Blue, Stone 2 (4). Full even margins all around, tied by blue Raleigh N.C. double-circle datestamp with unclear date on Ordnance Department N.C. semi-official imprint adversity cover made from a commissary invoice, including entries for orders of lard, salt pork and beef, addressed to Mocksville N.C., minor edge wear at left, Very Fine and rare, paper shortages in the Confederacy are well known and necessitated the re-use of various documents to create envelopes, this cover shows that those shortages were not limited to citizens but affected government entities as well

Sale 1257, Lot 2520, Handstamped Paid and Due MarkingsRomney (West) Va. Feb. 1 (1862). Bold strike of circular datestamp with matching "PAID" and "5" handstamps on small cover to Estelleville Va., turned and re-used to military address with 5c Blue, Stone 2 (4), Position 29, ample margins to clear, cancelled by manuscript "5", matching "Morells Mills Tenn. April 26th/62" manuscript postmark, enclosure dated March 8, 1862, accepts marriage proposal, Very Fine and unusual, there was no post office readily accessible for the second mailing, thus the delay between writing and mailing, Romney is in West Virginia

Randolph of Richmond imprint, to Lime Kiln N.C., expertly repaired including backflap reattached, otherwise Very Fine, this is reported to be the only example of this design in color, signed Dietz

Sale 1257, Lot 2686, Patriotic Covers: Soldier Designs5c Blue, Stone 2 (4). With bottom sheet margin, manuscript "X" cancel, no town postmark but originates in Clayton N.C. (based on the other, nearly identical example), on oatmeal cover to Moffitt's Mills N.C. with Single Standing Soldier and Verse Patriotic design (SN-2, Verse 34), the uniform in the style of the 1820s, W. & J. Bonitz, Goldsboro N.C, small cover nick behind top of stamp

FINE AND EXTREMELY RARE. BELIEVED TO BE ONE OF ONLY TWO KNOWN EXAMPLES OF THIS SINGLE SOLDIER PATRIOTIC DESIGN.

Both of the reported examples of this design are franked with the 5c Blue Lithograph, affixed in the same orientation, with "X" cancels and to the same addressee. The other example, last offered by us in Sale 619 (lot 93), has a manuscript "Clayton N.C. Apr. 18" postmark and is ex Weatherly and Everett. Another example which we identified as SN-2 in our 2014 sale of the Dr. Brandon collection is actually SN-3.

Va. with red General P. G. T. Beauregard Three-Quarter Portrait in Oval Patriotic design (MS-1), "Due 5" handstamp for deficiency in 10c rate, Gordonsville datestamp struck over Beauregard's portrait, perhaps reflecting the postmaster's opinion (by August 1862 Beauregard's reputation had faltered badly), backflap added, stamp has been expertly repaired with margins added, estimate adjusted accordingly, ex Freeman

Dark color, large margins to in at lower left where separated roughly, slight gum toning along edges, tied by blue "Graham N.C. ?" balloon-style circular datestamp with rim made up of dashes, on small cover to Raleigh N.C., original contents include a small heavy brown envelope with a Camden County N.C. 25c fractional note, dated Sep. 9, 1861 and numbered 71, also with misspelling of state as "Carolna", note with wear along folds and couple small tears, cover missing backflap, overall Fine and desirable with the obsolete fractional note and unusual postmark
