Oct. 16" circular datestamp on cover to Augusta Ga. with Small 10-Star Confederate Battle Flag with Gold Stars on Crossed Red Stripes Patriotic design (F10-18), printed on flap, some soiling and mended hole on backflap

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS ONE OF THE RAREST CONFEDERATE FLAG DESIGNS. IT IS ONLY KNOWN PRINTED ON THE FLAPS OF TWO COVERS, AND THIS IS THE ONLY ONE OF THE TWO THAT WAS CARRIED IN THE MAILS.

We record (as does the Wishnietsky book) only two examples of this rare design. The other was offered in our sale of the Dr. Brandon collection (Siegel Sale 1087, lot 157) and it was carried privately or by military courier. This cover, with the 10c Engraved Issue, is a great Patriotic rarity.

Illustrated in Wishnietsky's Confederate Patriotic Covers and Their Usages on p. 59

EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF THE FINEST TRANS-MISSISSIPPI EXPRESS COVERS EXTANT. ONLY A FEW ARE KNOWN WITH THE DISTINCTIVE 10-CENT KEATINGE & BALL PRINTING.

The majority of 40c Trans-Mississippi Express covers have stamps with faults or margins cutting into part of the design, and the covers are usually stained and faulty. The condition of the stamps and overall quality of this cover are extraordinary.

Ex Simon. With 1997 P.F. certificate.
