VERY FINE. A COLORFUL AND RARE EXAMPLE OF THIS 10-STAR FLAG PATRIOTIC DESIGN WITH TWO OF THE 5-CENT GREEN FIRST ISSUE LITHOGRAPH.

This is also a scarce Confederate use from Norfolk, which was permanently occupied by Union forces one month after this cover was mailed. We have encountered only a few examples of this design, each used from Norfolk with General Issue stamps, and most are faulty to a far greater degree than the cover offered here. This is also the latest use of this design that we have offered.

Large to full margins, tied by "STEAM" straightline handstamp which indents stamp from strong strike, on buff cover to Natchez Miss., manuscript "Gen. Quitman" name-of-boat directive at bottom, Very Fine, the General Quitman is believed to have been built at New Albany, Indiana, in 1859 for a New Orleans ship owner, it was "one of the best and most powerful boats on the river" in 1862 and one of the last to escape from the city on April 24, evacuating upriver "a good many ladies, some officers, and some ordnance stores.", ex Antrim

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE NAME-OF-BOAT HANDSTAMP FOR THE STEAMER TWILIGHT, STRUCK ON A COVER BEARING THE FIRST CONFEDERATE GENERAL ISSUE.

The Twilight operated on the Mississippi and Ouachita Rivers. The oval handstamp had a changeable slug for the day -- the other day we have seen is Saturday.

Illustrated in Milgram on p. 699. Ex Antrim and Weatherly, from whom the Kilbournes acquired the cover privately in 1964
