Sale Number 1215, Lot Number 2188, Philatelic History from the Trenchard CollectionEarliest Stamp Auction Catalogues, Earliest Stamp Auction CataloguesEarliest Stamp Auction Catalogues. Four catalogues, two are reported to be the first in the United States to list postage stamps, both are titled "Catalogue of Coins, Medals and Continental Money by Bangs, Merwin & Co.", dated March 19-20 and May 8-9, 1862, each with one lot offering postage stamps (stated to be "quite rare"), second pair of catalogues dated May 28, 1870 and Sep. 8, 1870, both of these are reported to be the earliest catalogues which exclusively offered postage stamps, the first was written by J. W. Scott and included a "5c 1852 Sandwich Islands stamp" (5c Hawaiian Missionary), which realized $11.00 (the highest price in the sale), the second is by Leavitt, Strebeigh & Co., typical faults as would be expected with catalogues this old, a fascinating group
