FINE-VERY FINE. AN IMPRESSIVE SIZED MULTIPLE OF THE ONE-PENNY RED BROWN FROM PLATE 74. THERE ARE VERY FEW MULTIPLES LARGER THAN THE BLOCK OFFERED HERE.

According to records, Plate 74 was registered on Jan. 14, 1847. Ex Baillie.

Over 600 stamps, incl. 480 singles, 33 pairs, 6 strips of three, 6 strips of four, strip of six and 4 blocks of four, much is black numeral cancels but also some Maltese incl. one with captured imprint in margin and a couple numerals, condition is mixed but we notice quite a few four margined examples, Fine, Scott Retail alone exceeds $8,700.00

Used on envelope with elaborate three panel design of Mr. Albert Smith's Overland Mail tied by "545" (Newcastle-upon-Tyne) in barred oval, circular datestamp on reverse dated Mar 13, 1851, sent to Durham (backstamp), additional small design on top flap (partly torn), Very Fine, the colorful Albert Smith performed before large audiences by telling exaggerated tales of his travels to the Near East while a moving panorama screen appeared in the background -- a brief biography is contained in British Pictorial Envelopes of the 19th Century (pp. 316-317), the Albert Smith three-panel covers are scarce and generally prepaid without stamps, with R.P.S. certificate
