30c Red Orange, First Color (Scott No. 51)
One of the finest of the 30 recorded examples
Census No. 61-OG-08

SPECIAL NOTE: There are many United States stamps that look similar to the rarities listed below. Some of the differences between expensive rarities and common stamps can be subtle, including differences in perforation, shade and size. These stamps should have certificates from a recognized expertizing committee, such as The Philatelic Foundation or P.S.E.

Our census of the 30c 1861 First Color contains a total of 30 examples, including one in the New York Public Library collection. A characteristic common to most examples of the 30c 1861 First Color is faint creasing, which in some cases is very severe and in others barely visible. The stamp illustrated above has never been described or certified with a crease, but under close scrutiny it can be detected. The diagonal crease, or bend, is so gentle it is almost invisible to the unaided eye. It is possible, that a 30c 1861 First Color stamp does not exist in condition superior to the above example.
