1c Blue Green, Vertical Coil (Scott No. 316)
One of only twelve recorded unused pairs
Census No. 316-OG-PR-01
Realized $80,000 in Siegel Sale 804 (lot 524)

SPECIAL NOTE: There are many United States stamps that look similar to the rarities listed below. Some of the differences between expensive rarities and common stamps can be subtle, including differences in perforation, shade and size. These stamps should have certificates from a recognized expertizing committee, such as The Philatelic Foundation or P.S.E.

Armstrong, in his book United States Coil Issues 1906-38, recorded 33 stamps in total certified by the Philatelic Foundation. Our census of Scott 316 records twelve unused pairs and an unused single, for a total of 25 stamps. Armstrong probably double-counted a few pairs that were certified more than once. In addition, the strip of four in his notes has since been broken into two pairs, and the strip of three has been broken into a pair and a single.

Only four of the well-centered pairs are sound.
