SPECIAL NOTE: There are many United States stamps that look similar to the rarities listed below. Some of the differences between expensive rarities and common stamps can be subtle, including differences in perforation, shade and size. These stamps should have certificates from a recognized expertizing committee, such as The Philatelic Foundation or Professional Stamp Experts.

Our census of the 5c Continental Special Printing contains only nine examples that are available to collectors. The Scott Catalogue value has risen dramatically in the past few years, from $36,500 in 1998 at the time of the Zoellner sale to $75,000 (2003). The American Soft-Paper Special Printing, Scott 204, has a comparable catalogue value (from $35,000 in 1998 to $85,000 in 2003) despite the fact that there are 18, or almost twice as many copies, recorded in our census for Scott 204. |
