A NEWLY DISCOVERED EXAMPLE OF E. W. BLACK'S EXPRESS, BRINGING TOTAL NUMBER KNOWN TO THREE.

E. W. Black operated a one-man trans-Mississippi service that appears to have existed briefly in the fall of 1864, carrying mail between Arkansas troops with the Army of Tennessee and correspondents across the river (reference: Stefan T. Jaronski, "Another Private Trans-Mississippi Express Service Uncovered", Confederate Philatelist, No. 241). This cover, from a correspondence new to the market, shows the $1.00 fee charged by Black. Another Black's Express cover from this correspondence realized $3,500 hammer in our Sale 801 (lot 770)
