Post Office
Business/Free. In circle boldly struck with "Richmond Va. Nov. 29"
(1864) circular datestamp on demonetized 3c Red Star Die entire to
postmaster at Halesford Va., very fresh EXTREMELY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE USE OF THE PRE-WAR RICHMOND POSTMASTER'S "FREE" HANDSTAMP IN 1864. The circular "Post Office Business/Free" handstamp used during the Confederate period is extremely rare in any form. The year of this usage, 1864, is determined by the type of circular town datestamp (large serifed letters, month and day, no year slug). This cover was previously believed to be a provisional Post Office Department entire, but is now known to be a Richmond postmaster's free-frank marking. Illustrated in Confederate Philatelist, Nov. 1998. Ex Dietz (signed), Emerson, Powell and Birkinbine. With 1973 P.F. certificate (Image) |
