bold "Pensacola Fla. Nov. 12" circular datestamp on buff cover to

with "Georgia Battery, Griffin Light Guard, Pensacola, Fla." Regimental
Imprint, H. P. Hill imprint, minor opening tear at top right, small
mended nicks at upper and lower right cornersVERY FINE AND HIGHLY EXHIBITABLE EARLY REGIMENTAL PATRIOTIC FROM PENSACOLA, FLORIDA. ONE OF THE MOST OUTSTANDING CONFEDERATE PATRIOTIC COVERS. With original letter enclosure datelined "Camp Stephens, Pensacola, Nov. 12th /61" and written by a soldier to his mother. Obviously well-educated and far more articulate than the average Confederate soldier, the writer used four pages to wax eloquently about the war, but it is early and he has seen no fighting. Excerpts are: On the Federal landing at Beaufort, "Oh Ma it makes me shudder to think how Carolina blood will flow ere those infernal scoundrels are driven from our beloved soil.", On the North, "I have no doubt but what we have left enough brave men at home to teach Lincoln's abolitions hordes the madness and folly of attacking us in our homes and to let them know that it is just as much of an impossibility for Yankees and Carolinians to exist on the same soil as it is for them to free our negroes.", and continued fervent patriotism with many references to spilling blood and a final battle cry "I wear that Palmetto Tree on the front of my cap and I am going to wear it there when I get into a fight and let the Yanks know that I am not afraid to own my native state." With 1965 P.F. certificate (Image) |
