The Ferrary collection contained two 5c tete-beche pairs on separate covers to Thomas B. Lynch. One of these covers later appeared in the D. Scott Gallagher collection (after a large stain was cleaned from the cover). The other pair was removed from its cover and cosmetically improved. This pair on cover, also from the Lynch correspondence, was acquired privately by Argentum from an old-time collection and does not appear in any records we have reviewed. (Image)

where frameline just touched, intense shade and impression, tied by blue
"Nashville Ten. Sep. 9, 1861" cds on orange cover to William Gaines at
Gaines Landing Ark., matching "Paid" hs, two-line "Due 5" hs, filing
pinholes at top not affecting stampVERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY CHOICE EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT VIOLET BROWN PROVISIONAL.
The due marking was applied at Memphis in transit to Arkansas via the Little Rock and Memphis Railroad, after it was determined that Gaines Landing exceeded the distance for the 5c rate. Gaines Landing lies on the Mississippi River, approximately 350 miles south of Memphis (Image)
