Oct. 30" (1861) cds on cover to New York City with red Palmetto Tree, View of Vacant Charleston Harbor, and Caption "Charleston, S.C. 1871", the so-called "Prophecy of 1861" design, a strangely subtle prediction of Charleston's fate in 1871, reduced at right, otherwise Very Fine, we know of only two other examples of this Union propaganda design, this is the only one used from West Charlton Vt., ex Matthies $ 600

"May 19" (1862) date on 3c Pink entire to Patten Me., with soldier's letter on red and blue McClellan Patriotic lettersheet, good content from a bored soldier who has not seen fighting and believes (naively) that "the fighting is about all over" (the fall of New Orleans weeks earlier gave this soldier great confidence), Extremely Fine, Ship Island served as a prison and headquarters for the Union fleet and troops $ 400
