1003 The Papers of John W. Denver. Mexican War Captain, Commander in Army of the Tennessee, for whom the city of Denver, Colorado, is named. Collection of over 60 letters and papers relating to Will Denver, some written by family members but also several written by him, some with fascinating content from Civil War period incl. one stating "Free Americans of African descent shall have the same pay, same bounty, same rations, same clothing and on equal footing with white soldiers on every respect...all officers or soldiers who shall interfere with this policy in any respect either in words or in acts against it...I am empowered by the President to dismiss from the Army.", also better war-related content regarding the siege of Vicksburg, hiring Southerners as scouts, an 1847 letter to General F. Pierce (later President), regarding battles, casualties, etc., some with Gold Rush content, few sent to him regarding his duel in Cal., some faults, a very interesting group of letters relating to many important aspects of this famous figure's life $ 1,800

Jefferson" as President and with James Madison's signature as Secretary of State, illustration of sailing ship and lighthouse at top, document relates to Brig. Hamilton David and states that it belongs to citizens of the United States, dated July 6, 1805, folded vellum requires pressing, some slight edge wear but no serious flaking or loss of manuscript, signatures very bold, Very Fine and scarce document signed by both Jefferson and Madison $ 6,750
1006 C Andrew Johnson. Free frank "Free Andrew Johnson Ex Pres U.S." on yellow cover to New York, neat "Greenville Tenn. Dec. 7" cds at L., stamp removed, 1872 docketing on back, small tear at T. from opening, otherwise Fine $ 425
1007 Rufus King. Signer of the Constitution, free frank "R King" on folded letter to James Greenleaf in Philadelphia, 1787 docketing, light strike of "N-YORK Feb. ?" and "FREE" hs, usual light file fold, Very Fine $ 325
1008 James Madison. Bold signature as President on printed four-languages ship's paper dated Nov. 24, 1809, establishes the Brig. Orion as property of citizens of the United States, interesting note in space for Secretary of State "vacant at the signing by the President", we are unable to locate any other references to vacancies of that office during this time, document faulty with splits along folds, toning and some erosion (none affecting Presidential signature), still rare signed while actually President $ 850

Orion and posted at various ports of call, range of postmarks, mostly family correspondence but also some receipts, etc., mixed condition, still an interesting group $ 375
