EXTREMELY FINE. SURELY ONE OF THE FINEST EXAMPLES OF THE $5.00 COLUMBIAN USED ON COVER.

Used during the first month of issue, very little of the cost of the stamp was necessary to pay the actual postal rate. The sender must have paid close attention to the condition of the stamp before selecting it for use. (Image Magnifier)

VERY FINE. AN ATTRACTIVE AND RARE COVER BEARING THE $5.00 COLUMBIAN ISSUE.

Only a small part of the postage paid was necessary for the letter to reach its intended destination. The recipient, Otto G. Mayer & Co., was a shipping and commission firm that started business in 1835. However, by 1902 they were insolvent and declared bankruptcy, due in part to a sharp decline in the price of rubber. Perhaps the high cost of this stamp contributed to their bankruptcy as well. (Image Magnifier)
