Page" Attempted Transatlantic Flight from Newfoundland, Harbor Grace Mail
(AAMC 1005a). Harbor Grace Jun. 14 circular datestamp, lightly
cancelled $1.00 on 15c Surcharge (C2), rare "Atlantic Aerial Mail,
Handley Page, Jun. 14, 1919" oval cachet on back of cover to Hawick,
England, redirected to officer with North Russian Relief Force in
Archangel, Russia, stained and water damaged, both sides affixed to
inner card for support -- aviators Kerr and Brackley abandoned their plans
for a transatlantic flight after learning of Alcock and Brown's success,
they crash landed in Nova Scotia en route to New York, and mail intended
for the R-34 dirigible flight arrived too late -- the condition of this
cover may be due to the crash, the forwarding to British forces in
Archangel is extraordinary, AAMC $1,800.00 without premium for oval cachet

Biddlescombe, made another attempt on July 17, but the plane crashed during take-off. The mail bag, which contained 25 additional letters franked with the $1.00 Alcock-Brown stamp, was taken to England by Major Raynham but forgotten until the following January, which explains the Jan. 7 backstamp applied by the London post office. Holcombe notation at bottom right. AAMC $2,500.00 without premium for the surcharge variety. (Image) |
