Collectors of this issue know that it is extremely difficult to find the first Bureau issue in centered, Mint Never-Hinged condition, particularly the higher denominations. This is mostly due to production problems as the Bureau of Engraving and Printing assumed responsibility for stamp production after the American Bank Note contract expired. In fact, this is only the second Mint Never-Hinged Scott 261A we have offered in the last five years.

As mentioned in the descriptions of previous lots, the higher-value 1894 Unwatermarked Bureau Issue can be difficult to find in well-centered and sound condition, due to production problems. Mint Never-Hinged examples in superior grades, such as the stamp offered here, should be considered great condition rarities. This is the only $2.00 1894 we have offered in Mint Never-Hinged condition in the last five years, in any grade.
