5c Red Brown (12).
Original gum, huge margins including part of adjoining stamp at right, rich
colorEXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF THE FINEST OF THE FEW KNOWN 5-CENT 1856 STAMPS WITH ORIGINAL GUM. A KEY CLASSIC UNITED STATES RARITY. When this stamp was offered in the 1976 Grunin sale, there was a faint gum stain which has now been removed and no longer affects the stamp's appearance. The P.F. also records a 1992 certificate noting the faint gum stain and a small corner crease, but we do not see the corner crease. Ex Grunin and Golin. With 1989 and 1999 P.S.E. certificates (both stating "it is genuine, unused original gum") (Image) |
