ONLY SEVEN SINGLES AND TWO PAIRS ARE KNOWN TO US. Of the examples contained in our records, only three singles and one pair are sound. Aug. 24, 1924 2:30 PM" wavy-line machine cancel on cover to Detroit Mich., barely reduced at left VERY FINE. A RARE COVER WITH THE 2-CENT HARDING WITH TYPE III SCHERMACK PERFORATIONS. VERY FEW ARE KNOWN. Accompanied by copy of letter from Mail-o-Meter Company dated Oct. 23, 1924, stating that "In response to your inquiry, please be advised that we did perforate a few two cent Harding stamps, the exact amount, however, I cannot say, as our records are not clear regarding the various issues which are perforated and reeled by the Schermack method." Die sunk on 120 x 142mm card with full die sinkage, engraved cross shows faintly, printed "70015" on back, fresh and bright EXTREMELY FINE. POSSIBLY THE ONLY LARGE DIE ESSAY OF THE 2-CENT 1931 RED CROSS ISSUE IN PRIVATE HANDS. The stamp was issued on May 21, 1931, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Red Cross. The cross was printed in red. It appears in outline in Black on this essay. Scott Catalogue does not list an essay for this stamp. Ex Brazer (where it realized $1,600 hammer in our 1990 auction).
