near-perfect centering, neat grid cancelsEXTREMELY FINE GEM PAIR OF THE 1857 PERFORATED ONE-CENT TYPE III. EXCEEDINGLY RARE IN SUCH PERFECT CONDITION. Although Plate 4 was designed with the introduction of perforations in mind, it was still difficult to apply the perforations without impinging on the designs. An examination of Plate 4 stamps reveals that many have perforations either touching or cutting into the design. This Plate 4 Type III-IIIa pair, with near-perfect centering that clearly displays the characteristics of the types, should be considered a condition rarity. We doubt that a finer pair exists.
