Blood's City Despatch,
Philadelphia Pa., (1c) Bronze on Lilac (15L14). Large margins to just
touched at left, acid cancel and tied by "Blood's Despatch Jan. 5 10-1/2
A.M. 1857" datestamp, used with three 1c Blue, Ty. II (7) singles,
Plate 2, ample margins to slightly in, tied by bold "Philadelphia Pa. Jan.
5" circular datestamp on small cover to Alexandria Va., Very Fine,
extremely rare combination of 1c 1851 and Blood's stamp -- in late 1856 the
supply of Eagle Carrier stamps in Philadelphia was depleted, at which point
1c 1851's were used to pay the carrier fee, this cover was probably stamped
by the sender with 1c 1851's obtained for carrier usage, but instead a
Blood's stamp was affixed and the letter was dropped into one of their
letter boxes -- ex Voorhees and Gibson
