1c Blue (63). Two, with one
3c Rose (65) affixed on 5c fractional currency note from William
Newton & Co. in Newport R.I. and dated July 24, 1862, most perfs
scissors-trimmed, few creases, otherwise Fine, scarce and unusual item, due
to a shortage of coins and distrust of paper currency, some private firms
used stamps to try and increase their business, much along the same lines
as encased postage, unfortunately due to the fragile nature of the paper
used many are defective or were destroyed -- a similar note realized $1,250
hammer in our 1994 Sapperstein sale (Sale 761)
