VERY FINE APPEARANCE. ONE OF TWO STRIPS OF THREE OF THE 25-CENT BLUE VIRGINIA CITY PONY EXPRESS STAMP ON COVER. A REMARKABLE ARTIFACT OF WESTERN POSTAL HISTORY.

This cover was sent by the American Gold & Silver Mine Co. from San Francisco to the Clerk of the District Court in Virginia City, Nevada Territory, to establish a mining claim. It is one of four recorded covers bearing multiples of the Wells Fargo & Co. 25c Blue: 1) Strip of 5 plus 1, Feb. 25, 1863, Edwards Collection, Christie's Oct. 29, 1991, 2) Strip of 3, Feb. 20, 1863, the cover offered here, 3) Strip of 3, Feb. 15, 1863, Shreves Dec. 9, 1994, and 4) Pair, Feb. 19, 1863, Kramer collection.
