"Mobile Ala. May 18" double-circle datestamp on red and yellow
Confederate wallpaper cover to Union Mills Pa., 1865 docketing reads
"Edwin - from Montgomery Alabama May 7th 1865. Envelope made of
wallpaper", with original enclosure dated May 7, fascinating contents
discuss troop movements and also mentions "This is Johnny Reb paper I
write this letter on and will enclose it in a Reb envelope made out of
wallpaper look inside and see for yourself. If us Yanks had to come down to
this I would think we was hard up.", other intersting contents
regarding Montgomery and the mix of people there, ends with "P.S. Peace
is declared the fighting is all done what a blessing to all. Don't laugh
when you see this Reb letter", some expected edgewear, opened for
display, VERY FINE. AN INCREDIBLE USAGE OF A CONFEDERATE WALLPAPER COVER BY A UNION SOLDIER DURING THE CLOSING DAYS OF THE CIVIL WAR. VERY FEW ARE KNOWN. The letter is datelined May 7, which is three days after the surrender by Gen. Taylor of Alabama and Mississippi Department at Citronelle Ala. The cover was mailed to Union Mills Pa., which became a center for Ku Klux Klan activity during the Reconstruction period. (Image) |
