**Canal Zone (Scott 102a-117)**

642		1931, 3c Violet, Booklet Pane of Six, Handmade Perf Margins (102a). Complete booklet of two panes, both panes placed inverted in relation to cover, top pane with plate No. 18803, single staple at top, cover with slight fold at left from being bent back, few perfs sensibly reinforced VERY FINE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE COMPLETE BOOKLET OF THE 3-CENT LINCOLN, SCOTT 102a. ONLY TWO INTACT BOOKLETS ARE KNOWN, AND ONLY SIX PANES IN TOTAL ARE RECORDED. According to Canal Zone Stamps, the 3c Lincoln was in production for only a short period of time before the switch was made to the 3c Washington stamp. Only one intact booklet and four panes are reported by the authors, the booklet offered here was apparently unknown to them. Position 9 in top right corner plate no. 20933 block of six, lightly hinged at top reinforcing perf separations which caused foldover and left part of "Canal" printed on back, lightened blue crayon affcets the error FINE. THE UNIQUE "ZONE" ONLY OVERPRINT ERROR ON THE 3-CENT 1933 ROTARY PRESS PRINTING ISSUE. According to Canal Zone Stamps, the error was created by a foldover. Some perforations at top became separated, causing the one stamp to fold over. It was apparently noticed and marked for destruction in blue crayon, but was never destroyed. The blue crayon has been lightened, partly affecting the color of the error stamp. With 1981 A.P.S. certificate. Illustrated in Canal Zone Stamps on p. 170. Unlisted in Scott.
