thus mostly likely a control mark, clear "Paid" straightline cancel
(impression ties thru paper), pencil "X" cancel just ties corner of stamp,
lightly struck "Forwarded by Hale & Co. from New Bedford" oval handstamp on
folded letter to Salem Mass., datelined "1st Day" with no other
notation, few scattered soiling specks, Extremely Fine, the Red stamp is
scarce on cover, especially from the New Bedford office, this cover comes

ms. crossed-lines precancel, cut to shape (mostly clear), used on cover
front only to New York City street address, ms. "March 26" date
(1845), red "Forwarded by Hale & Co. from Boston" oval handstamp, sealed
tear at top well clear of stamp, which is Very Fine, extremely rare -- with
this new addition, we now record ten examples of this manuscript overprint
variety, including 6 covers, this cover-front and 3 off cover -- with 2002
