2591 c image3c Orange Brown (10). Ample margins except touched at top right, tied by blue "Philadelphia Pa. Oct. 16" circular datestamp, red star carrier handstamp on blue cover to Princeton N.J., 1851 docketing on back, Very Fine, this is the earliest recorded use of the red star according to Mr. Johnstone, ex Gibson (Image) E. 150-200 400.00
2592 c image1c Blue, Ty. IV, 3c Dull Red (9, 11). 1c recut once at top and once at bottom, 1c tied by grid, 3c tied by "Philadelphia Pa. Jun. 13" circular datestamp on cover to St. Paul Minn., 1857 docketing at left, Very Fine and choice, in 1856, the supply of Eagle Carriers in Philadelphia was exhausted, and for the first time, 1c regular postage stamps were used for the carrier fee, thus requiring a new accounting procedure -- in this period we find rare examples of 1c 1851's used for the carrier fee, as well as use of the black grid or U.S.P.O. oval to cancel the stamp prepaying the carrier fee (Image) E. 400-500 400.00

2594 c image3c Dull Red (11). Ample margins to barely in, tied by blue "Philadelphia Pa." circular datestamp (ca. 1852-53) on buff cover to local street address, blue "1" in octagon for carrier fee due from addressee, ms. note on back "The wrong stamp -- J. C. Montgomery Asst. P.M." -- the significance of this notation is that at this time (prior to 1856) Philadelphia's carrier department sold its own carrier stamps and the money received went into the carrier fund, therefore, a regular-postage stamp (for which the post office received payment) could not be used to prepay the carrier fee, because the two departments had separate accounts without any facility for handling a letter such as this -- a Fine and fascinating artifact of Philadelphia's carrier era (Image) E. 300-400 425.00
