VERY FINE. ONE OF FIVE REPORTED COVERS WITH THE "LS" PHILADELPHIA CARRIER STAMP.

This May 17 postmark on a clearly-dated 1849 letter is an appropriately early use of the "LS" stamp. The Philadelphia carrier service was reorganized in February 1849, and stamps were issued at that time.

Ample to large margins, cancelled by clear strike of red star, which ties by impression thru paper on folded notice to local street address, Oct. 20, 1851 receipt docketing, stamp has faint diagonal crease at upper left, still Extremely Fine, this Gold on Black was used between April 1851 and October 1851 -- this example, a late usage, has the red star cancel, which came into us in October (10/16 earliest recorded usage in lot 2591) -- ex Meyersburg (Image) E. 400-500 325.00
