EXTREMELY FINE GEM. AN EXTREMELY RARE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 10-CENT 1870 UNGRILLED NATIONAL BANK NOTE ISSUE.

When Robert Zoellner was very near to completing his United States collection, only three or four stamps remained on his want list. One of these was the 10c 1870 National, Scott 150, with original gum. Reflecting on twelve years of collecting, he realized that the 10c almost never appears in sound, original-gum condition with Very Fine or Extremely Fine centering. Mr. Zoellner finally accepted a well-centered example without gum. Other accomplished collectors such as Lewis Golin (our Sale 812) and Elliot Weisman (Shreves sale) were also unable to obtain Scott 150 in this grade. In searching past auction catalogues, we have located precious few examples of Scott 150 in the condition of the stamp offered here. Collectors who are unwilling to compromise on quality are well-advised to pursue this opportunity.
