1867-68 Grilled Issue (C thru Z Grills)
Lot Sym. Lot Description Est/Cat Realized
88 image3c Rose, C. Grill (83). Clearly-defined grill, pretty shade, bold rosette cancel, choice centering with wide margins, trivial nibbed perf at upper left, still Extremely Fine, with 1980 P.F. certificate (Image) 950.00 450.00
89 og image3c Rose, Partially Erased C. Grill (83 var). Original gum, clear grill, bright color on crisp paper

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. A RARE ORIGINAL-GUM STAMP SHOWING PARTIAL ERASURE.

In a few areas of the C Grill (Positions 99-100R, 89-90R, 79-80R, 68-69R and 1-2L, 11-12L, 21-22L and 31-32L), the points between grills were insufficiently planed away or erased when the A Grill was converted to the smaller C Grill. As a result, some of the stamps from the C Grill have grills measuring approximately 18mm wide. Many of the positions listed above show only faint traces of the larger grill. These so-called Partially Erased C Grill stamps are very rare, especially in such pristine condition and with such easily recognizable grill points.

Ex Sheriff. With 1971 P.F. certificate. Scott footnote values only used and on cover. (Image)

E. 5,000-7,500 4,000.00
90 ng image2c Black, D. Grill (84). Unused (no gum), deep shade and proof-like impression, clearly-defined grill, unusually wide margins

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. A RARE UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE 1868 2-CENT D GRILL. A REMARKABLY FRESH STAMP IN TERMS OF IMPRESSION, PAPER, STRENGTH OF GRILL AND OVERALL APPEARANCE.

The 2c D Grill is one of the rarest of the regular-production 1868 Grilled Issues. It is usually seen with narrow margins and poor centering. The stamp offered here, with unusually wide margins, should be considered a great rarity.

With 1983 P.F. certificate. (Image)

7,500.00 6,250.00
91 image3c Rose, D. Grill (85). Brilliant color on bright paper, sharp grill points, light strike of target cancel, unusually wide margins

EXTREMELY FINE EXAMPLE OF THE 1868 3-CENT D GRILL.

With 1987 P.F. certificate (Image)

950.00 2,350.00
92 image2c Black, Z. Grill (85B). Clearly-defined grill points, beautiful centering with wide margins, sharp impression nicely contrasted by blue grid cancel

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1868 2-CENT Z GRILL.

The plates used to print the Black Jacks did not provide enough space between subjects for the large 12-gauge perf holes. Consequently, most Black Jack stamps have perfs touching the design on one or two sides. This scarcity of four-margined copies multiplies exponentially when the Z Grill is factored into the equation. Only a small quantity of 2c sheets were grilled during the period when the Z device was active -- after the D Grill, the Z is the rarest of the Black Jack grilled stamps.

With 1980 and 2002 P.F. certificates. (Image)

1,150.00 4,250.00
93 image12c Black, Z. Grill (85E). Enormous margins, intense shade and impression, circle of wedges cancel

EXTREMELY FINE. AN UNUSUALLY WIDE-MARGINED EXAMPLE OF THE 1868 12-CENT Z GRILL. SCARCE WITH SUCH ENORMOUS MARGINS.
