EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS IS THE INCOMPARABLE CORNER SHEET-MARGIN PAIR OF THE 24-CENT STEEL BLUE -- WIDELY REGARDED AS CONTAINING TWO OF THE FINEST EXAMPLES OF THE 24-CENT STEEL BLUE IN EXISTENCE.

The 24c 1861 Steel Blue is one of the rarest of the shade varieties of this issue. In original-gum condition, it is extremely rare, with most of the single examples coming from off-center blocks that were broken after the major sales of the 1950's and 1960's. This pair, which combines perfect centering, extraordinary color and full lightly-hinged original gum, is a miraculous survivor. Although the value of the individual stamps, if offered separately, would be many times the $8,000 per stamp Scott value, it is difficult to assess the premium for a multiple of this quality. We are optimistic that one of the collectors who prize outstanding philatelic relics will acquire this pair and maintain it as an intact multiple, just as the Druckers did after the 1988 sale of the Klein collection, of which this pair was an undisputed highlight.
