Postmasters' Provisionals (Walterborough to Winnsborough)
Lot Sym. Lot Description Est/Cat Realized
5800 c imageWalterborough S.C., 10c Carmine entire (108XU2). Perfectly clear strike on light gray adversity cover made from printed form, to Adams Run S.C., matching "Walterborough S.C. Apr. 15" circular datestampEXTREMELY FINE. WE RECORD ONLY FIVE EXAMPLES OF THE WALTERBOROUGH HANDSTAMP.

Although the Scott Catalogue lists the 10c handstamp in both Black and Carmine, neither Crown nor our own records confirm the existence of a Black entire. Of the Carmine we record five entires, all 1864 dates as follows: Jan. 15, Mar. 18, Apr. 15 (the cover offered here, last offered in our sale 810), Aug. 31 (turned usage, offered in our Sale 801) and Nov. 9 (turned usage, possibly 1863). A cut square on a 3c Red Star Die is also known.

The Scott Catalogue also describes this provisional marking as "Typeset", implying that it was press-printed, which is not the case. It was handstamped from an ornately framed marker. The turned usages and absence of control marks on any of the examples indicate that this was a handstamped "Paid" marking, not a true provisional. However, it is the Scott-listed 108XU2 and, whatever its status, the marking is extremely rare.

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE WINNSBOROUGH CONFEDERATE POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL. OF THE THREE KNOWN, THIS IS THE ONLY ONE USED AS POSTAGE.

The Crown book records only two examples of this provisional: 1) unused, ex Kohn, and 2) used with 10c Blue, Die A (12) affixed over provisional (the provisional not used as postage). This example, unlisted in Crown, is the only 10c Winnsborough provisional validly used as postage.
