VERY FINE STRIKE OF THE FIRST HANDSTAMPED MARKING USED BY THE SALT LAKE CITY POST OFFICE. AN EXTREMELY RARE ARTIFACT OF MORMON POSTAL HISTORY.

The writer, on his way to Sacramento, refers to the government contract mail route, which started in November 1850: "the mail leaves Independence Mo. the 1 of each month for here and leaves here for Sacramento the following month so that it takes more than 2 months after it leaves the settlements." 338 "Utah Postage" Fantasy Issue. Three examples of the 1864 philatelic fantasies depicting Brigham Young with the words "Utah Postage/Five Cents", two in Red, one in Green (with a postmark that appears to be a genuine contemporary datestamp), faults, these are among the earliest bogus issues created for collectors, very scarce and sought-after E. 150-200 180.00
