May 27" cds on yellow cover to Fairfax County Va., forwarding notation to Alexandria Va., bold "Due 3cts." straightline, backstamped "P.O. Dpt. Dead Letter Office Jun. -- 1861" oval and Washington D.C. cds (flap partly torn away), Very Fine, a fascinating usage -- prior to June 1, probably within days of Virginia's May 23rd popular vote to join the Confederacy, the mail route to Richmond was the first closed by order of the U.S. Post Office Department, thus this cover was sent to the U.S. D.L.O. -- accompanied by copy of article in July-August Confederate Philatelist discussing this cover, with 1983 P.F. certificate (Image) E. 750-1,000 1,100.00
