Black Running Pony oval datestamp clearly struck on rebacked front -- the date is either Apr. 10 (second eastbound trip) or 20 (fourth eastbound trip) -- free franked by an employee of the Pony Express and addressed to "Agent at Morrell's Crossing" with notation "Containing Key", dampstained with the ghost impression of a key clearly visible on front, vertical creases

ONE OF THE FEW PONY EXPRESS COVERS IN EXISTENCE CARRIED FREE ON COMPANY BUSINESS.

This cover was obviously used to convey a mail-lock key to one of the Central Overland California & Pikes Peak Express Company agents located at Morrell's Crossing. (Image)
