32-page booklet, "The Postal Service Book", produced in 1885 by the Meriden
Conn. postmaster, E. D. Hall, cover in blue and red on blue paper, content
reads "The Handy Book of the Postal Service has made many friends
throughout the country... The object of this book is to place before every
one the rules and regulations of the post in daily use... The diffusion of
knowledge of this kind insures greater promptness and certainty of mail
delivery." -- content includes information on office hours, domestic and
international postage rates, carriers, money orders, and a list of UPU
participating countries, along with a healthy dose of ads -- small
thumbtack hole at top left, Extremely Fine and rare, we have never seen
another example of this truly spectacular booklet

The Tientsin oval was typically used as a transit marking on the backs of covers passing through the U.S. Postal Agency. Of the dozen or so examples known, only a few show the oval datestamp used to cancel the stamp at Tientsin. This is one of the finest strikes and covers known to us. (Image) |
