Lot Sym. Lot Description Est/Cat Realized
628 image15c Brown & Blue, Ty. II, Center Inverted (119b). Beautiful deep rich colors and intense impressions, light strike of cork cancellation leaves vignette clearly visible, centered slightly to lower left but perfs are clear all around

FINE. ONE OF THE FEW SOUND EXAMPLES OF THE 15-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL INVERT ERROR IN EXISTENCE. ONLY 91 COPIES IN TOTAL ARE RECORDED.

Our unpublished census of 1869 Inverts contains 91 examples of the 15c Invert, including three unused and 88 used (one in the British Library's Tapling collection and three No. 119c varieties). We estimate that only twelve to fifteen used copies are sound, including copies with tiny corner creases. A large number -- more than half -- have serious faults or repairs. The stamp offered here, in completely sound condition, is a very desirable copy of this rarity.

632 image30c Blue & Carmine, Center Inverted (121b). Unusually bright colors and fine impressions of the flags and central design, exceptionally well-defined grill, bold red Leaf cancellation at the bottom of the stamp which leaves the inverted flags completely unobscured, inconsequential corner crease at top left and corner perf crease at bottom left

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. THE FINEST OF THE FIVE RECORDED 30-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL INVERTS CANCELLED IN RED.

The red Leaf cancel was used in New York City on Supplementary Mail. It is scarce on the 30c 1869, and only five of the 36 recorded 30c Inverts are cancelled in red.
