Horizontal strip of three and pair arranged as a strip of five, fresh and bright color, tied by three strikes of "Washington D.C." 1859 datestamps, the left strike is dated June 29, other two strikes dated June 30, on small cover to Paris, France, strip also tied by "New York Paid 12 June 22" credit datestamp and French transit, receiving backstamp, two stamps barely affected from placement near edge of cover, Very Fine and unusual usage, the use of five 3c stamps is uncommon as is the apparent confusion in Washington D.C. as to the date, ex Brown (Image) E. 400-500

Apr. 24, 1861" circular datestamp on red and blue 7-Star Confederate Flag Patriotic cover to the editor of a Whig newspaper in Quincy Ill., with original letter enclosed, datelined "Steamer `Runyan', Paducah Apl. 23" from a fervent secessionist who writes "Hurrah for the Southern Confederacy. Send on your swarms of nigger-stealers. We will soon be ready to bury them like hogs. This is for your private pipe" (sealed splits along folds) -- the sender has added seven state abbreviations below the flag "N.C., Mo., Ky., Va., Md., Ark., Tenn & c." for anticipated Confederate states

VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE TYPE OF CONFEDERATE FLAG DESIGN AND REMARKABLE USAGE. WRITTEN ON BOARD A STEAMBOAT AT PADUCAH, KENTUCKY, ON ITS WAY UP THE CUMBERLAND RIVER AND POSTED AT CLARKSVILLE, TENNESSEE.
