VERY FINE. EXTREMELY RARE USE OF A CONFEDERATE PATRIOTIC COVER-TURNED-WRAPPER TO MAIL PRINTED MATTER FROM A SOUTHERN SYMPATHIZER IN BALTIMORE.

Ex Corwin. With 1980 P.F. certificate stating "reduced and refolded" which does not adequately explain that the envelope was fashioned into a wrapper by the sender (as the location of the address lines prove). (Image)

2043 c image1c Blue, Ty. V (24). Horizontal strip of four, tied by two strikes of octagonal "Philadelphia Pa. Mar. 12, 1859" datestamps on newspaper wrapper to local street address, ms. "four newspapers" at left, few small faults affect right stamp only, otherwise Very Fine, an exceedingly scarce usage, this is the largest franking of the 1c stamp used to pay the newspaper rate, illustrated and discussed in an article by Calvet M.
