2030 c image1c Blue, Ty. III, IIIa (21, 22). Three singles, two of Ty. IIIa, deep rich Plate 4 color, tied by "Milwaukee Wis. May 25" circular datestamps on orange cover to Middlebury Vt., also bearing clear strike of "Middlebury R. & B. R. R. Jun. 4, 1858" oval datestamp, fresh and Very Fine, the recipient was a postmaster and station agent for the railroad and probably applied the marking to record the date of arrival, with 1988 P.F. certificate (Image) E. 1,500-2,000

Vertical and horizontal strips of three, all beautifully centered, horizontal strip affixed to back with one stamp partly torn away from opening, used with 12c Black, Plate 3 (36b), all stamps tied by bold strikes of "Pittsburgh Pa. Aug. 15, 1861" double-circle datestamp on buff cover to Wurttemberg, Germany, red "New York Paid 10 Aug. 24" credit datestamp, red crayon rates, transit and receiving backstamps, Very Fine, rare franking during the twilight days of the 1857-61 Issue -- the stamps were gradually demonetized beginning on August 17, 1861, in Baltimore (Image) E. 3,000-4,000

VERY FINE. A COLORFUL AND EXTREMELY RARE FRANKING FOR 10-CENT TRANSCONTINENTAL RATE.

Neinken plating notes on back "Plate 4 - 1c, Left 1c is from 6th Row, Relief F, Type Ic, Right 1c is Type IIIa from 6th Row - MN 7/52". Working with the Ashbrook-Neinken plating charts, we plate the left stamp as Position 52L4 and the right as Position 44R4, both being Type IIIa, not Ic. (Image)
