VERY FINE AND CHOICE. A LATE USE OF THE W. P. WOOD CENSOR MARKING AND THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF MAIL FROM OLD CAPITOL PRISON TO A FOREIGN DESTINATION.

The latest recorded usage from Old Capitol Prison in Washington D.C. is August 1865 (according to Galen Harrison's book). Although Old Capitol was the first Federal prison to hold Confederate prisoners -- captured at the First Battle of Bull Run -- it was used primarily to secure spies and citizens suspected of disloyal activity. This June 1865 cover was probably sent by someone detained after the war or a court-martialed Union soldier.
