According to the docketing at the top of this cover, the letter was written during the Independent Statehood period and one day prior to Louisiana's Confederate Statehood. The February 7 New Orleans postmark indicates Confederate usage of U.S. postage. It is especially interesting that the addressee was aboard the Federal naval vessel Congress. The Congress was later sunk in an engagement with a Confederate ironclad vessel. Ex Turner and Grunin. Illustrated on the front cover of the third Grunin sale. With 1988 P.F. certificate (Image) |
