317 c Hale & Co. "Mailed Late" Handstamps. Four folded letters from New York City to Mass. and Conn. with "Mailed Late for the" (followed by date) straightline handstamp in three different styles, all have red Collect box, two with additional New York office oval handstamps, all markings in red, dates are 1/22/45, 3/10/45, 4/23/45 and 6/11/45, file folds, excellent strikes of the "Mailed Late" markings, Very Fine and scarce group, this marking was applied to letters that were received too late for the last train of the day (a reflection of the reputation for promptness earned by Hale & Co.) E. 400-500

New York. 26 folded letters or cover, excellent range of markings and usages, includes 3 of the scarce early "Forwarded Through/Hale's/Letter Office/New York" four-line handstamp with "6" rate (Jan.-Feb. 1844 usages), 14 oval and Collect box combinations, 4 Collect box only, 2 "6-1/4" rates and one "12-1/2", and 2 with 75L5 (one creased), three covers to Conn. with ms. "2" or "8" rates indicating local delivery charge, condition generally Very Fine, a significant group of covers for the specialist looking for subtle usage varieties, the starter looking for a nucleus collection, or the dealer looking for a mark-up E. 750-1,000

Building New York" oval handstamp on Aug. 30, 1844 folded letter to Boston, sender's routing "Per Hale & Co. Express", file fold, Very Fine (Image) E. 400-500

Position 5 with top right corner sheet margin, huge at bottom, slightly in at left, Third State showing defective plate at right, cancelled by one of three bold strikes of red "Paid" cancel on May 14, 1845 folded letter from Staten Island to Boston, red "Forwarded by Hale & Co. from Courier & Enquirer Building, New York" oval handstamp -- the first "Paid" was applied to the letter, then the stamp was affixed over the "Paid" and cancelled by a second strike, followed by a third strike positioned at left -- the "Paid" on the stamp is heavy enough to indent the paper thru the lettersheet, which leaves no doubt that the stamp originated, but the sequence of markings is very unusual, Very Fine, rare use from Staten Island (Image) E. 500-750
