INDEPENDENT MAILS continued...

Hale & Co. (Danvers, MA to Haverhill MA)
Lot Sym. Lot Description
298 c imageHale & Co., (5c) Blue, Street Address Omitted (75L5). Position 15 on Second State plate, cut to shape, tiny red ms. "E. S. Dans." overprint in blank address space, initials of E. W. Simpson, Hale's agent in Danvers Mass., tied by framed "Collect Six Cents for Hale & Co." handstamp, brownish "Forwarded by Hale & Co. from Danvers" oval handstamp on folded cover (front with part of four flaps) to Brooklyn N.Y., street address added by Hale's local delivery agent, sealed tear at bottom left, file folds, neither affecting stamp

VERY FINE. ONE OF TWO OR THREE EXAMPLES OF HALE & COMPANY'S DANVERS OFFICE HANDSTAMP. THIS IS THE ONLY STAMP KNOWN WITH THE DANVERS OVERPRINT. AN OUTSTANDING INDEPENDENT-MAILS USAGE.

Michael Gutman reports another Danvers cover, addressed to S. H. Low in New York City and docketed "1844/E. W. Upton/Aug. 26 Danvers", with 75L5 tied by the framed Collect handstamp. A third Danvers cover has been reported, but not confirmed. To the best of our knowledge, this is the only example of a Hale & Co. stamp with the Danvers overprint, which was obviously applied to stamps before use.

The stamp on this cover comes from Position 15 in the right vertical column. It does not show the plate damage found on this position on the Third State plate, therefore, it is a Second State impression -- from an early printing after the plate was modified by deleting the old address -- and probably dates from the summer of 1844. 299 c image(HARTFORD CONN.) Forwarded by Hale & Co. from Hartford. Red oval handstamp -- much clearer strike than usual -- matching "Collect Six Cents for Hale & Co." framed handstamp on undated folded cover to Boston street address, file fold, Very Fine, extremely scarce (Image) E. 400-500
300 c image(HARTFORD CONN.) Forwarded by Hale & Co. from Hartford Conn. Red oval handstamp on two folded letters, one Dec. 20, 1844 to Troy N.Y. with Albany Collect handstamp faintly struck in red, other Jan. 21, 1845 with red Collect box uprated to 12-1/2c, file folds, Fine-Very Fine strikes of the scarce Hartford oval (Image) E. 500-750
301 c (HAVERHILL MASS.) Forwarded by Hale & Co. from Haverhill. Red oval handstamp and matching Collect box on Sep. 14, 1844 folded letter to New York City street address, a second strike on half of a cover with 75L1 cancelled by red Collect box, Very Fine E. 200-300
302 c image(HAVERHILL MASS.) Hale & Co., (5c) Blue, Street Address Omitted (75L5). Two, one has red script "h" initial and other has ms. "Haverhill" overprint, both applied before use, each stamp cut to shape and tied by red Collect box, matching bold strike of "Forwarded by Hale & Co. from Haverhill" oval handstamp on folded cover to New Bedford Mass., docketing indicates Sep. 2 (1844) origin date, file fold thru both stamps, otherwise Very Fine, each overprint ("h" and "Haverhill") is extremely rare -- the combination of the two is extraordinary and suggests that first stamp was applied by the sender and second was used to uprate the letter at the Haverhill office (Image) E. 750-1,000
303 c imageHale & Co., (5c) Blue, Street Address Omitted (75L5). Position 17 with "Wail" for "Wall" variety, Second State of plate (undamaged), slightly irregular right margin but clear to large on other sides, ms. "C" initial probably applied as a cancel, brownish "Forwarded by Hale & Co.'s Great Eastern Mail" oval handstamp used in conjunction with bold red "H. T. Crofoot's Newburyport Letter Office" oval handstamp on Oct. 16, 1844 folded letter to Worcester, turned and re-used from Worcester to New York City with Hale's red Collect box -- the first letter is from John Balch to his brother, Benjamin, coldly informing Ben he will not lend him money, in response, Ben has forwarded the letter to Josiah Hale in New York City, with a letter explaining the situation and referring to his brother with an anti-Semitic slur -- file folds thru stamp, still Fine, a very scarce and unusual conjunctive usage (Image) E. 500-750
304 c Forwarded by Hale & Co.'s Great Eastern Mail. Three folded letters, each with red oval handstamp and Collect box, from Boston (Mar. 7, 1845), Portsmouth (Sep. 27, 1844) and Charlestown (Jul. 7, 1844), Fine E. 200-300
