Cent. Double-oval handstamp with eagle in red on brown envelope to
local street address, red star cancel struck directly over oval, neat June
4, 1852 docketing partly over ovalVERY FINE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE RED U.S.P.O. OVAL AND EAGLE HANDSTAMP APPLIED TO ENVELOPES SOLD TO THE PUBLIC. Similar covers with this marking were sold in our auctions of the Robert B. Meyersburg and David Golden collections (Sale 791, lot 282, and Sale 817, lot 388). The use of the red star cancel is strong evidence that the envelope was sold to the public with the red U.S.P.O. oval to indicate prepayment. Ex Chapman and Caspary. (Image) |
