Honour's City Express and Penny Post continued...
Lot Sym. Lot Description
94 image(Honour's) City Post, Charleston S.C., 2c Black (4LB3). Three large margins, touched at top, tied by brownish "Paid" straightline, used with 3c Dull Red (11), ample margins to slightly in, tied by blue "Charleston S.C. Paid Nov. 27" (ca. 1854) circular datestamp on blue front only to New York City street address, Fine, only three or four 4LB3 covers/fronts are known with the "Paid" cancel, ex Caspary (Image) E. 500-750
95 c imageHonour's Penny Post, Charleston S.C., (2c) Black on Bluish (4LB11). Large margins all around, used with 3c Dull Red (11), ample margins to just into frameline at top, both stamps tied by blue "Charleston S.C. Paid Oct. 19" (ca. 1855) circular datestamp on manila cover to Mrs. Jane B. Miller, Effingham S.C.

EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF SIX RECORDED COVERS WITH A COMBINATION OF THE RARE HONOUR'S "PENNY POST" STAMP AND 3-CENT 1851 ISSUE. THIS IS ONE OF THREE KNOWN COVERS WITH THE "PENNY POST" STAMP TIED BY THE CHARLESTON DATESTAMP.

The Honour's stamp bearing the legend "Penny Post" is extremely rare. With the emergence of the Hall collection, three new entries have been made to our census for the Golden sale. Our records now contain 14 genuine covers, including 6 with the 3c 1851, 2 on U10 entires, 5 singles used alone (one to Ireland, one on a part cover -- see lot 95), and one pair on a Valentine cover. Of the 14 covers, only 7 have a cancellation that ties the carrier stamp (6 of which are used with 3c 1851 or U10). Only 3 covers have the Charleston datestamp tying the carrier stamp: the cover to Ireland, the cover offered here and its twin from the Golden sale, addressed to Rev. Miller at Effingham, postmarked on the same day, October 19 (ca. 1855). Because the Honour's stamp was usually placed opposite the U.S. postage, it is rarely found tied by the circular datestamp.

Ex Ackerman. This is probably the first time this cover has ever been offered at auction. (Image)

96 c imageHonour's Penny Post, Charleston S.C., (2c) Black on Bluish (4LB11). Large margins to full at right, tied by ms. "2", used with 3c Dull Red (11), one large margin, others touching to slightly in, tied by "Charleston S.C. Feb. 14" Valentine's Day circular datestamp (ca. 1856) on small cover to Bishopville S.C., identical ms. "2" on 3c stamp

EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF THE FINEST OF THE FIVE RECORDED COVERS WITH A FULLY-TIED COMBINATION OF THE RARE HONOUR'S "PENNY POST" STAMP AND 3-CENT 1851 ISSUE.

As detailed in lot 95, only 14 genuine Honour's 4LB11 covers are recorded, including 7 with the carrier stamp tied by a cancellation. Of the tied examples, 5 are used in combination with the 3c 1851. This is the only 4LB11 cover we have recorded with the manuscript "2" cancel repeated on the stamp paying regular postage. It is also the only Valentine's Day cover.

Ex Seybold. From our Sale 285, which featured the Philip H. Ward Carriers and Locals (sold anonymously). (Image)

98 c imageHonour's Penny Post, Charleston S.C., (2c) Black on Bluish (4LB11). Large margins except clear at bottom left, ms. "2" cancel (not tied), appears to have originated on 3c Red Nesbitt entire to New York City street address, "Charleston S.C. Paid Oct. 27" (ca. 1855) circular datestamp, some edge wear and toned spot at center of cover

VERY FINE. ONE OF EIGHT RECORDED COVERS WITH A COMBINATION OF THE RARE HONOUR'S "PENNY POST" STAMP AND REGULAR POSTAGE, OF WHICH TWO ARE 3-CENT NESBITT ENTIRES.

Our updated records contain 14 genuine covers, including 6 with the 3c 1851, 2 on U10 entires, 5 singles used alone (one to Ireland), and one pair on a Valentine cover.
